A male Dickcissel sings his heart out next to the
trail. Currently a member of the Cardinalidae family, in the past it has
been placed in the New World sparrow family and also in the oriole and
blackbird family. With advances in DNA research, one day we'll know
exactly how to classify this species. Dickcissels are prairie
residents. During the nesting season they are mostly solitary and
territorial. However, for the rest of the year, they gather in large
concentrations. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 6/9/22)
