A Snowy Egret was found on the 15th and 16th along Pool F's
outflow channel (below the lakes trail), usually in the company of a Great
Egret, Great Blue Herons, and an immature Black-crowned Night-Heron.
Snowy Egrets are much smaller than Great Egrets, plus they have a black bill,
black legs, and yellow feet. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 10/15/18)
A
total of 108 avian species (plus 1 sp.) was recorded this month, ranking this
month as the highest October (tied with October 2007) among 21 years of
records. October 2003 with 55 species remains as the lowest. This
total is 7 species less than last month and 11 more than October 2017.
Based
on citations in the 3rd Edition of “The Birds of Story County,
Iowa”, by Stephen J. Dinsmore and Hank Zaletel (2001), plus my personal
updates to the records, the Philadelphia Vireo sighting on the 11th
may represent a new extreme late Fall record (former record set on 3 Oct 1982
at Ames) for Story County. The female American Redstart on the 17th,
the Magnolia Warbler on the 10th, and the Indigo Bunting on the 8th
may also set new extreme late Fall records (former records set on 3 Oct 2017 at
AHHP, 9 Oct 2016 at AHHP, & 3 Oct 2009 at AHHP, respectively).
Listed
below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the
occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male,
♀=female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile, abp=adult breeding plumage, ad=adult,
anb=adult non-breeding), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back
yard, FY=front yard). The order follows the 58th Supplement
(2018) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American
Birds and the 18th Supplement to the 7th Edition
(1998).
