Feb 27, 2023: Ice Everywhere

Even the prairie plants could not escape getting a layer of ice from this week's storm. (Kelly Poole, 2/25/23)

Feb 25, 2023: Icy Trail

The recent freezing rain left hazardous conditions at the Park.  More than 98% of the length of the lakes trail is coated with ice. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 2/24/23).

Feb 19, 2023: Coyote

After eating a goose carcass on the south lake, this coyote trotted off to the bluff. (Tana Tesdall, 1/29/23)

Feb 11, 2023: Lots of Points!

A White-tailed Deer buck (10-11 points) found near the Upland Trail's south trailhead.  Another buck with a more abnormal rack followed closely behind.  They should be dropping their racks soon. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 2/4/23)

Feb 9, 2023: Dramatic Sunset

Dramatic clouds near sunset on Feb. 9 provided a stunning backdrop for some flying ducks. (Tom Meyer, 2/9/23)

Feb 7, 2023: Refreeze

Ice fishing past: refrozen lake surface with encased air bubbles over an old ice fishing hole, just north of the bridge separating North and South lakes. (Kirk Moloney, 2/7/23)

Feb 5, 2023: Red-bellied Woodpecker

The "red belly" of this female Red-bellied Woodpecker is visible in this shot.  Most of the time, one doesn't see the "red belly". (Wolf. Oesterreich, 2/2/23)

Feb 1, 2023: Wolf's January 2023 Wildlife Report

Snow Buntings breed in the high arctic regions, but can be found in our area during the Winter months.  The best time to find them is after a snowfall that has covered fields.  The buntings are then forced to seek food along road edges and are many times in mixed flocks with Horned Larks and/or Lapland Longspurs.  I have records from 2005 and 2006 of this species at the Park, but this is the first time that I have observed so many (16).  They were present on the south lake ice, at the SE corner where some corn had been dumped for the waterfowl.  Their Winter plumage always reminds me of vanilla ice cream with caramel swirls. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 1/22/23)

A total of 45 avian species (plus 2 sp. & 1 hybrid) was recorded this month, ranking this month as the 3rd highest January among 26 years of records.  This total is 17 species less than last month and 2 more than January 2022.  January 2019 with 49 species remains as the highest January total, while January 1998, with only 18 species, remains as the lowest.

Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (=male, =female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile, bp=breeding plumage, ad=adult, nb=non-breeding), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard).  The order follows the 63rd Supplement (2022) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 22nd Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
