Feb 1, 2020: Wolf's January 2020 Wildlife Report

Finding owls is always a pleasure, more so than just hearing them in the night.  The Barred Owl's "Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?" is quite familiar to most people.  However, this is just one of more than a dozen calls, ranging from a "siren call" to a "wail" to a sometimes frightening "monkey call".  During the day, Barred Owls roost on branches or in tree cavities and hunt at night. (Wolf. Oesterreich. 1/3/20)

A total of 40 avian species (plus 1 sp.) was recorded this month, ranking this month as the 5th highest January (tied with 2016) among 23 years of records.  This total is 14 species less than last month and 9 less than January 2019.  January 2019 with 49 species remains as the highest January total, while January 1998, with only 18 species, remains as the lowest.

Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (=male, =female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile, abp=adult breeding plumage, ad=adult, anb=adult non-breeding), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard).  The order follows the 60th Supplement (2019) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 19th Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).

I wasn't able to ride on the 4th (participated in the Neal Smith NWR Christmas Bird Count) and 19th-20th (too darn cold!).
