Sep 1, 2020: Wolf's August 2020 Wildlife Report

Sightings of Black-billed Cuckoos are becoming uncommon, so it's always a joy to find one at the Park.  (The Yellow-billed Cuckoo is much more common.)  Note the small white tips to the underside of the tail feathers and the red orbital ring, although just a hint of color in this photo.  Cuckoos eat a lot of spiny caterpillars.  These spines end up sticking to the cuckoo's stomach lining, which they then periodically shed as one giant pellet. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 8/7/20)

A total of 94 avian species (plus 1 sp. & 1 hybrid) was recorded this month, ranking this month as the 7th highest (tied with 2009) August among 23 years of records.  August 2007 with 107 species remains as the highest August , while August 2001 with only 46 species is the lowest.  This total is 12 species more than last month and 2 less than August 2019.

Based on citations in the 3rd Edition of “The Birds of Story County, Iowa,” by Stephen J. Dinsmore and Hank Zaletel (2001), plus my personal updates to the records, the American Wigeon on the 29th may represent a new extreme early Fall record for Story County (former record set on 4 Sep 1984 at Hendrickson Marsh).  The Osprey on the 1st ties with 2016 as the earliest Fall migrant.  The Mississippi Kite may only be the 2nd record for Story County.  The first was found on 22 May 1994 at Peterson Park.  The female Orchard Oriole on the 18th may be a new extreme late record (former record set on 24 July 1983 at McFarland Park).

Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (=male, =female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile, abp=adult breeding plumage, ad=adult, anb=adult non-breeding), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard).  The order follows the 61st Supplement (2020) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 20th Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
