I was getting ready to exit the Park when I received a text from Paul Domoto stating that he was watching 2 Northern River Otters at the south end of Pond P. I quickly rode back. Both otters appeared to be tired as they didn't move around much. Then they dropped into the water and swam under the downed tree. We soon lost sight of them. We hiked along the east side of the pond to a spot where we had a clear view of the pond. The otters had only gone a short distance before hauling out onto another log. One managed to find a "living" pillow upon which to rest its head. The Red-eared Slider at first appeared to move away, but then stopped and pulled in its legs and head. We departed, leaving the otters to continue their rest. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 9/2/20)
A total of 124 (+ 4 sp.) avian species was recorded this month, ranking this month as the 2th highest September among 23 years of records. September 2007 with 126 species remains as the highest September, while September 1998 and 2002 are the lowest with only 61 species. This month's total is 30 species more than last month and 25 more than September 2019.
The Winter Wren was a First-of-Year (FOY) record, while the Pine Siskin was a FOY record for my Yard/Park List.
Based on citations in the 3rd Edition of “The Birds of Story County, Iowa,” by Stephen J. Dinsmore and Hank Zaletel (2001), plus my personal updates to the records, the single Brown Creeper on the 21st ties the early Fall record for Story County set in 1982 at Brookside Park. The immature Mississippi Kite on the 14th may represent the third county record.
Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male, ♀=female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile, abp=adult breeding plumage, ad=adult, anb=adult non-breeding), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard). The order follows the 61st Supplement (2020) to the American Ornithological Society’s Check-list of North American Birds and the 20th Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
