March 1, 2021: Wolf's February 2021 Wildlife Report

A family of three (2 adults + 1 immature) taking off from the open water on the south lake to feed in the fields.  Also present in the photograph are Canada Geese, Mallards, and Northern Pintails. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 2/23/21)

High numbers of Trumpeter Swans continued from January through the 11th.  Then when the sub-zero temperatures hit the numbers dropped quite drastically.  The daily totals are shown in the table below.  The green boxes represent days when I wasn't able to get out there for a count or days when I arrived after many had already departed for the day.

One dead adult Trumpeter Swan was observed on the 3rd, 16th, and 25th.  I was able to retrieve the latter two (with Rick Dietz's help on the 25th) and turn in their carcasses to the DNR veterinarian (Dr. Rachel Ruden).  The one from the 16th was determined to have suffered from an extreme case of lead toxicosis.  However, although weakened by the lead poisoning, a canid attack was the ultimate cause of the swan's demise.  (I noticed that the neck was broken when I collected the bird and that a portion of the back flesh had been eaten.)  I had to dig out the swan from the ice on the 25th.  The swan probably had been there for some time, just hidden in the snow.  Once warmer days melted the snow, the carcass became visible.  I found no evidence of predation on this bird.  The cause of death is still being determined.

A total of 48 avian species (plus 1 sp. & 1 hybrid) was recorded this month, ranking this month as the 4th highest February among 24 years of records.  This total is 6 species more than last month and 12 more than February 2020.  February 2017 with 63 species remains with the highest February total, while February 2001 with only 17 species remains as the lowest.

Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (=male, =female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile, abp=adult breeding plumage, ad=adult, anb=adult non-breeding), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard).  The order follows the 61st Supplement (2020) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 20th Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
