June 1, 2022: Wolf's May 2022 Wildlife Report

A Gray Catbird, a member of the Mimidae family, gathers dry material to line its nest.  The name comes from one of its calls, "mew", which sounds like a cat.  Their long song can last up to 10 minutes.  They have a long tail, are gray overall with a black cap and cinnamon undertail coverts.  Catbirds consume a variety of insects and fruits. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 5/11/22)

A total of 151 avian species (+ 2 sp. & 1 hybrid) was recorded this month, ranking this month as the 3rd highest May among 25 years of records.  May 2020, with 163 species, remains as the highest May, while May 1998 with only 70 species is the lowest.  This total is 13 species more than last month and 1 more than May 2021.

Based on citations in the 3rd Edition of “The Birds of Story County, Iowa,” by Stephen J. Dinsmore and Hank Zaletel (2001), plus my personal updates to the records, the female Hooded Merganser (& her duckling) sighted on the 30th ties the extreme late Spring record for Story County (initially set in 2021 at Ada Hayden HP).  The Yellow-billed Cuckoo found on the 8th may set a new extreme early Spring record (former record set on 9 May 1985 in Ames) and the Willow Flycatcher on the 9th, may also set a new extreme early record (former record set on 12 May 2020 at Ada Hayden HP).

Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (=male, =female), age (im=immature, ad=adult,), plumage (bp=breeding, nb=non-breeding), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard).  The order follows the 62nd Supplement (2021) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 21st Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
