June 3, 2017: Wolf's May 2017 Wildlife Report

On the 11th, 8 Forster's Terns passed through the Park area.  Four of them circled over Pond M and also dove into the waters several times.  This tern was photographed shortly after a dive, in mid-rotation. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 5/11/17)

A total of 133 avian species (+ 1 sp.) was recorded this month, ranking this month as the 7th highest May among 20 years of records.  May 2006, 2008, and 2011, with 152 species, remain as the highest Mays, while May 1998 with only 70 species is the lowest.  This total is 33 species more than last month and 6 less than May 2016.

Based on citations in the 3rd Edition of “The Birds of Story County, Iowa,” by Stephen J. Dinsmore and Hank Zaletel (2001), plus my personal updates to the records, the Peregrine Falcon on the 19th and the Orange-crowned Warbler on the 25th may represent new extreme late Spring records for Story County (former records set on 16 May 1981 at Hendrickson Marsh and 22 May 2010 at Ames, respectively).  The Yellow-bellied Flycatcher observation on the 25th tied the extreme early Spring record (set in 1985 at Ames), while the White-crowned Sparrow on the 22nd tied the extreme late Spring record (set in 1993 at Ames).

Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male, ♀=female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile, abp=adult breeding plumage, ad=adult, anb=adult non-breeding), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard).  The order follows the 55th Supplement (2014) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 14th Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
