The Gray Copper (Lycaena dione) is one of the Park's
common butterfly species, although not too numerous this year. They have
a wingspan of 2.4 to 3.8 cm, have only 1 flight (from mid-June to July), and
nectar on several plant species, including Alfalfa, Sweet Clover, and
milkweeds. The image shows a female. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 6/28/18)
A
total of 75 avian species was recorded this month, ranking this month as the 6th
highest June among 21 years of records. June 2008 with 87 species remains
as the highest June, while June 2001 with only 42 species is the lowest.
This total is 71 species less than last month and 7 less than June 2017.
Listed
below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional
miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male, ♀=female), age
(im=immature, ju=juvenile, bp=breeding plumage, ad=adult, nb=non-breeding
plumage), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front
yard). The order follows the 58th Supplement (2017) to the
American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the
17th Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
