Rough-legged Hawks arrive in late October and leave our area
by early April. This Rough-legged Hawk was found hunting along the north
slope (Upland Trail). I watched as the hawk was first unsuccessful, but
after another attempt, came up with a small rodent. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 1/2/19)
A
total of 49 avian species (plus 1 sp.) was recorded this month, ranking this
month as the highest January among 22 years of records. This total is 3 species
less than last month and 7 more than January 2018. January 1998, with
only 18 species, remains as the lowest January.
Based
on discussions with Dr. Stephen Dinsmore, many of the individual duck species
may have been birds that lingered north of us or may have attempted to
over-winter there, but were forced south due to cold temperatures or loss of
open water. The Hermit Thrush and Yellow-rumped Warbler offer new Winter
records for Story County. The 132 Trumpeter Swans on the 20th
set a new Park record, breaking the former high of 109 set last Winter.
Listed
below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the
occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male,
♀=female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile,
abp=adult breeding plumage, ad=adult, anb=adult non-breeding), color phase
(b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard). The order
follows the 59th Supplement (2018) to the American Ornithologists’
Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 18th
Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
There
are no sightings for the 10th through the 13th; I was birding in NE
Minnesota. I also didn't ride the trails on the 3 days of the Polar
Vortex.
