July 13, 2019: Wolf's June 2019 Wildlife Report

A pair of Eastern Phoebes (one on left)  have been nesting along the backside of the Berger's residence for several years.  They back up to the savannah woods.  This year the phoebes, in their first nesting attempt, raised a Brown-headed Cowbird (right).  It's quite possible that this young cowbird tossed out the phoebe eggs or nestlings.  Brown-headed Cowbirds are brood parasites; the female lays her eggs in the nests of other bird species.  Cowbird eggs tend to hatch faster than the "host" species, thus getting a head start in obtaining food from their foster parents. (Wolf. Oesterreich)

A total of 78 avian species was recorded this month, ranking this month as the 5th highest June among 22 years of records.  June 2008 with 87 species remains as the highest June, and June 2001 with 42 species as the lowest.  This total is 72 species less than last month and 3 more than June 2018.

Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (=male, =female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile, abp=adult breeding plumage, ad=adult, anb=adult non-breeding), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard).  The order follows the 59th Supplement (2018) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 18th Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).

There are no records for the 29th and 30th; I was in Alaska.
