A pair of Cooper's Hawks have nested in the savanna woods
for a few years. On the 26th of March I observed them adding sticks to
last year's nest and also to a new nest across the trail to the north. By
the 5th of April, they appeared to have abandoned the former nest and are
concentrating on the new nest (by adding more sticks). The female
appeared to sit steadily on the nest by the 22nd of April. The first
downy nestling was seen on the 1st of June, with the second on the 8th of June,
and the third on the 9th of June. Then on the 18th of June, while taking
pictures of the nestlings, I noticed not only a fourth nestling, but also a
fifth! On the 23rd of June, I noticed that at least 2 had left the nest
(fledged). By the end of the month, all had fledged. (Wolf Oesterreich, 6/18/20)
A
total of 82 (+2 sp & 1 hybrid) avian species was recorded this month,
ranking this month as the 3rd highest June (although tied with 2011
& 2017) among 23 years of records. June 2008 with 87 species remains
as the highest June, with June 2001 with 42 species as the lowest. This
total is 81 species less than last month and 4 more than June 2019.
Listed
below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the
occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male,
♀=female), age (n=nestlings, im=immature,
ju=juvenile, bp= breeding plumage, ad=adult, anb=adult non-breeding), color
phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard). The
order follows the 60th Supplement (2019) to the American
Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 19th
Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
I
didn't visit the Park on the 2nd (16-hours as poll worker).
