The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is involved in a
multi-state research project to learn about the survival rate of Trumpeter Swan
cygnets during their first year of life. Family groups were targeted this
past Summer and 51 swans were captured while one adult was molting and
flightless and before the cygnets could fly. Nine adults received GPS
units and 42 cygnets received green, numbered neck collars. The
photograph shows one family unit, with their 3 cygnets having neck collars (#s
7P5, 7P6, & 7P7). There was also another family unit with 2
neck-collared cygnets (#s 8P6 & 8P7). None of the adults had GPS
collars. A total of 40 swans were on the south lake this morning. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 12/2/20)
