A somewhat early single Bonaparte's Gull was found on the 27th, at the south lake's SW corner (near the peninsula). The gull would flush when kayakers and fishermen approached. but returned several times to the sandbar. Finally, mid-morning, the gull took flight. Bonaparte's Gulls are one of the smallest gull species. In breeding plumage they have black heads, orange-red legs, and black bills. In flight, they show a white wedge on the leading edge of the wing. The black hood is lost in the non-breeding plumage, but there is a black spot on the "cheek" (behind the eye). The species was named for French zoologist Charles Lucien Bonaparte, a distant cousin of Napoleon. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 9/27/21)
A total of 123 (+ 3 sp.) avian species was recorded this month, ranking this month as the 3rd highest September among 24 years of records. September 2007 with 126 species remains as the highest September, while September 1998 and 2002 are the lowest with only 61 species. This total is 16 species more than last month and 1 less than September 2020.
Based on citations in the 3rd Edition of “The Birds of Story County, Iowa,” by Stephen J. Dinsmore and Hank Zaletel (2001), plus my personal updates to the records, the single Golden-crowned Kinglet on the 23rd ties the extreme early Fall record for Story County (1982 at Ames & 2012 at Ada Hayden HP). The single Fox Sparrow on the 27th and the White-crowned Sparrow on the 23rd may represent new extreme early Fall records (former records set on 28 Sep 2010 & 24 Sep 2017 at Doolittle Prairie, respectively).
Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male, ♀=female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile, bp=breeding plumage, ad=adult, nb=non-breeding, f=fawn), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard). The order follows the 62nd Supplement (2021) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 21st Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
