A pair of American Kestrels was found at and near the Purple Martin "Big House". The male was
perched on the house as he consumed a mouse. The female was perched in a sapling, not far from the male. Kestrels are the smallest falcon found in Iowa and can be found year-round. They mostly consume insects and other invertebrates, small rodents, and sometimes small birds. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 2/25/22)
A total of 48 (plus 1 hybrid) avian species was recorded this month, ranking this month as the 4th highest (& tied with 2021) February among 25 years of records. This total is 5 species more than last month. February 2017 with 63 species remains as the highest February total, while February 2001 with 17 species remains as the lowest.
Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male, ♀=female), age (im=immature, ad=adult,), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard). The order follows the 62nd Supplement (2021) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 21st Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
