Painted Ladies (Vanessa cardui) inhabitat every continent except Australia and Antarctica. In our area they arrive in Spring in high numbers, although this year was a bust. Few were found this Summer. However, a southward migration has been underway in Central Iowa for the past few days. Larvae feed on more than 100 host plants. Favorites include thistles, hollyhock, and mallow. Adults prefer the nectar from the Asteraceae Family (thistles, asters, ironweed, blazing star, etc). These two are nectaring on New England Aster. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 9/29/22)
A total of 105 (+ 7 sp. & 1 hybrid) avian species was recorded this month, ranking this month as the 7th highest September (& tied with 2005) among 25 years of records. September 2007 with 126 species remains as the highest September, while September 1998 and 2002 are the lowest with only 61 species. This total is 4 species more than last month and 18 less than September 2021.
Based on citations in the 3rd Edition of “The Birds of Story County, Iowa,” by Stephen J. Dinsmore and Hank Zaletel (2001), plus my personal updates to the records, the single Fox Sparrow on the 27th ties the extreme late Fall record for Story County with 2006 and 2021 (original former record set on 2 Oct 1986 at Brookside Park).
Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male, ♀=female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile, bp=breeding plumage, ad=adult, nb=non-breeding, f=fawn), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard). The order follows the 63rd Supplement (2022) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 22nd Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
There are no records for the 1st through the 14th; I was out-of-town.
