Rough-legged Hawks breed in the arctic and show up in our
area beginning with late October and depart by early April. However, the
Winter months are usually the best time to see one of these hawks. Note
the small bill. Many times you'll see one "hovering" over the
landscape, like an American Kestrel. From above, look for the white
"rump" and from underneath, note the black patches at the
wrist. On their wintering grounds, they will eat mostly small
mammals. The "rough-legged" in their name refers to the
feathered legs. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 12/2/19)
A
total of 54 avian species (+ 1 sp.) was recorded this month, ranking this month
as the 4th highest December (tied with December 2011) among 23 years
of records. This total is 12 species less than last month and 2 more than
December 2018. December 2016, with 67 species remains as the highest
December, while December 2003, with only 27 species, as the lowest.
Listed
below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the
occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male,
♀=female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile,
abp=adult breeding plumage, ad=adult, anb=adult non-breeding), color phase
(b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard). The order
follows the 60th Supplement (2019) to the American Ornithologists’
Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 19th
Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
Few
or no records were tallied on the 1st (returning from Texas), 15th
(participated in the Saylorville Christmas Bird Count [CBC]), 19th
(participated in the Carroll County CBC), and 28th (participated in
the Boone CBC).
