At first, I thought that this female Striped Saddlebags (Tramea
calverti) was a new record for the Park and Story County. However, I
learned that the actual first individual was recorded about one month earlier
(a male on the 10th of June) by an ISU post-doc (Dept of Ecology, Evolution,
& Organismal Biology). This species has only been found in two other
Iowa Counties: Allamakee in 1972 and Dickinson in 2012. So far this year,
two to three individuals have been recorded in Iowa, all at the Park.
Striped Saddlebags are a widespread neotropical species occurring from southern
Arizona, southern Texas, and southern Florida south to Argentina, also through
the West Indies. Despite this southern range, vagrants have been found in
22 states. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 7/11/18)
A
total of 69 (plus 1 sp.) avian species was recorded this month, ranking this
month as 7th highest July total among 21 years of records.
July 2007 with 84 species remains as the highest July, while July 1998, with
only 45 species, is the lowest. This total is 6 species less than last
month and 11 less than July 2017.
Based
on citations in the 3rd Edition of “The Birds of Story County,
Iowa,” by Stephen J. Dinsmore and Hank Zaletel (2001), plus my personal
updates to the records, the sighting of the breeding-plumaged Common Loon on
the 6th may be the first July record for Story County.
Listed
below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional
miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male, ♀=female), age
(im=immature, ju=juvenile, bp=breeding plumage, ad=adult, nb=non-breeding
plumage), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front
yard). The order follows the 58th Supplement (2017) to the
American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and
the 17th Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
