The number of Trumpeter Swans this month has exploded, easily breaking last year's record of 199 birds at one time. The new record is 265 swans on the 29th. The table below shows the daily totals, with the green boxes indicating days I wasn't present. Five of the immatures have green neck collars (#s 7P5, 7P6, 7P7, 8P6, & 8P7) and are part of a multi-state study looking at morbidity rates and movements of immature Trumpeter Swans. Two to three Tundra Swans have also been present on the latter days of the month.

A total of 56 avian species (+1 hybrid) was recorded this month, ranking this month as the 4th highest December among 24 years of records. This total is 16 species less than last month and 2 more than last year. December 2016, with 67 species remains as the highest December, while December 1997, which was only a partial month, has the lowest total with 12 species. If you disregard this year (1997), then December 2003, with 27 species, is the lowest.
Based on citations in the 3rd Edition of “The Birds of Story County, Iowa,” by Stephen J. Dinsmore and Hank Zaletel (2001), plus my personal updates to the records, the pair of Common Goldeneyes last observed on the 29th may represent a new extreme late Fall record for Story County (former record set on 28 December 1998 at Hallett’s Quarry). The Pied-billed Grebe also on the 29th may also represent a new extreme late Fall record (former record set on 18 December 1999 at Hallett’s Quarry).
For 2020, I recorded 216 avian species at the Park, setting a new record in 23 years. Three species were added to my Park List (Mississippi Kite, Pileated Woodpecker, & Western Tanager), which is now at 278 species. That's 65% of the species that have been recorded in Iowa. Not bad for one location!
Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male, ♀=female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile, abp=adult breeding plumage, ad=adult, anb=adult non-breeding), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard). The order follows the 61st Supplement (2020) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 20th Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
I was not present at the Park on the 20th (Saylorville Christmas Bird Count) or the 26th (Boone County CBC).
