My third Common Gallinule record for the Park occurred on the 18th. This bird, a cousin to the American Coot, was found at Pond E. Note the reddish shield and bill, with a yellow tip, and the white along the flanks. The American Coot has a mostly white bill and no white along the flanks, The American Coot is also slightly larger.
A total of 150 avian species (+ 4 sp. + 1 hybrid) was recorded this month, ranking this month as the 3rd highest May total (tied with 2019) among 23 years of records. May 2020, with 163 species, remains as the highest May, while May 1998 with only 70 species is the lowest. This total is 24 species more than last month and 13 less than May 2020.
There was almost a complete failure in Canada Goose hatching success. Only two families were encountered and the first one ended up losing all their goslings. Most of the nests had been plundered by predators. We normally have a few Eastern Bluebird families nesting at the Park, but I haven't seen any attempt this year. There were also low numbers of butterfly and dragonfly/damselfly species. The cool weather may have been a major factor.
Based on citations in the 3rd Edition of “The Birds of Story County, Iowa,” by Stephen J. Dinsmore and Hank Zaletel (2001), plus my personal updates to the records, the drake American Wigeon sighted on the 30th may represent a new extreme late Spring record for Story County (former record set on 12 May 2015 at AHHP). The female Hooded Merganser on the 30th may also be a potential new extreme late Spring record (former record set on 29 May 2005 at AHHP), while the 2 White-rumped Sandpipers on the 2nd may set a new extreme early Spring record (former record set on 6 May 1984 at Colo Ponds).
Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male, ♀=female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile, bp=breeding plumage, ad=adult, sa=sub-adult, nb=non-breeding), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard). The order follows the 61st Supplement (2020) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 20th Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
