The Salt Marsh Caterpillar (Estigmene acrea) is found in
open areas from Canada south to Florida and Texas. They feed on many
herbaceous and low woody plants. Salt Marsh Caterpillars are highly
variable in color, ranging from nearly yellow to black. They are also
fast crawlers and attain a length of up to 5.5 cm. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 7/3/21)
A total of 77 (plus 4 sp. & 1 hybrid) avian species was recorded this month, ranking this month as 4th highest July total (tied with 2008) among 24 years of records. July 2007 with 84 species remains as the highest July, while July 1998 remains as the lowest. This total is 2 species less than last month and 5 less than July 2020.
Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male, ♀=female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile, bp=breeding plumage, ad=adult, sa=sub-adult, nb=non-breeding, d=duckling, f=fawn), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard). The order follows the 61st Supplement (2020) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 20th Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
