Two Cattle Egrets were present in the north wetlands
today. Three had been found on the 3rd. They are shorter than Great
Egrets and denser than Snowy Egrets. Note the yellow bill and the
yellowish plumes. They tend to feed in fields instead of along
streams. Cattle Egrets are originally from Africa. Somehow they
reached northeastern South America back in 1877 and then slowly made their way
northward, reaching the U.S. in 1941 (and nesting by 1953). They have
spread out, even reaching Alaska and New Foundland. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 5/5/22)
