While searching for warblers, thrushes, and vireos in the
bluff woods I flushed 4 American Woodcocks from a footpath. They all flew
off in different directions, but one dropped down in front of me.
Woodcocks are shorebirds (Scolopacidae), but prefer forested areas and old
fields. In early Spring the males perform a "sky dance" at dusk
and dawn. With poor light conditions, they are usually heard (buzzy peent)
more than observed. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 5/22/20)
A
total of 163 avian species (+ 2 sp. & 1 hybrid) was recorded this month,
ranking this month as the highest May among 23 years of records. May 1998
with only 70 species is the lowest. This total is 38 species more than
last month and 13 more than May 2019.
Based
on citations in the 3rd Edition of “The Birds of Story County,
Iowa,” by Stephen J. Dinsmore and Hank Zaletel (2001), plus my personal
updates to the records, the Willow Flycatcher sighted on the 12th
may represent a new extreme early Spring record for Story County (former record
set on 19 May 1984 at Hendrickson Marsh). The White-crowned Sparrow
observation on the 23rd may be a new late Spring record (former
record set on 22 May 1993 at Ames & in 2017 at AHHP).
Listed
below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the
occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male,
♀=female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile, bp=
breeding plumage, ad=adult, anb=adult non-breeding), color phase (b=blue,
w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard). The order follows
the 60th Supplement (2019) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list
of North American Birds and the 19th Supplement to the 7th
Edition (1998).
