Dec 1, 2022: Wolf's November 2022 Wildlife Report
Winter finches have arrived in Iowa, including the Purple Finch. Look through all the House Finches (present year-round) and you may find one of more Purple Finches. The males are colored rose red and lack the heavy striping of House Finches, while the female (this photo) has a white eyebrow stripe, which the female House Finch lacks. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 11/13/22)
A total of 82 avian species (plus 5 sp. & 1 hybrid) was recorded this month, ranking this month as the highest November among 25 years of records. November 1999 with only 40 species remains as the lowest November. This total is 25 species less than last month and 18 more than November 2021.
Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male, ♀=female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile, bp=breeding plumage, ad=adult, nb=non-breeding, f=fawn), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard). The order follows the 63rd Supplement (2022) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 22nd Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
