June 29, 2023: Beautiful Summer Day!
Bright white clouds reflected off the deep blue north lake on a beautiful summer day. (Kevin Kane, 6/27/15)

June 25, 2023: Young Fawn
This young fawn stood still and posed for quite some time. It just stood there eating crownvetch and watching everyone go past on the path by the north lake. (Tana Tesdall, 6/16/22)

June 23, 2023: Song Sparrow
Song sparrow posing on a perch along the trail at the southwest end of South Lake. (Kirk Moloney, 6/5/23)
June 21, 2023: Nest-building Cedar Waxwings
Nest building is in full swing at Ada Hayden. This Cedar Waxwing was one of several that were collecting nest material at The Bluff (Greg Courtney, 6/05/2023).

June 19, 2023: Sunday Sunset
Sunday's sunset started out very promising, but then broke up a bit. Nevertheless I got a few good shots. (Tom Meyer, 6/18/23)
June 17, 2023: Woodchuck
June 15, 2023: Return of the Dickcissel
Dickcissel have returned to Ada Hayden in largo numbers. During the next few months, these will be one of the most noticeable (and vocal) birds on the Upland Trail and in other grassland habitats in the park (Greg Courtney, 6/03/2023).

June 13, 2023: Great Blue Heron
A Great Blue Heron preens while standing on a branch above the diminishing waters of Pond J.
(Wolf. Oesterreich, 6/12/23)
June 11, 2023: Heard but Often Hidden…
Although often hiding in dense vegetation, Common Yellowthroat can be heard throughout the park. This was one of many of these colorful birds along the Upland Trail (Greg Courtney, 6/03/2023).
June 9, 2023: Rippled Reflections
A calm sunrise formed an excellent palette for the reflection of clouds at South Lake (Greg Courtney, 6/03/2023).

June 7, 2023: Marvin
"Marvin", the male Common Merganser, found mostly on the south lake, is silhouetted in the early morning light. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 5/11/23)
June 5, 2023: Warbling Vireo
Although its distinctive song is readily heard, finding a Warbling Vireo takes a bit more work. They easily blend in with the vegetation, so look for movement. This species does nest at the Park. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 5/10/23)

June 1, 2023: Wolf's May 2023 Wildlife Report
At the Park, Sandhill Cranes are usually seen in flight, but sometimes they are actually on the ground. This lone crane was found at Pool C, earlier in the month. While writing down some notes I looked up and spotted the crane flying past, very close. There is hope that someday a pair will nest at the Park. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 5/5/23)
A total of 141 avian species (+ 3 sp.) was recorded this month, ranking this month as the 8th highest May among 26 years of records. May 2020, with 163 species, remains as the highest May, while May 1998, with only 70 species, is the lowest. This total is 28 species more than last month and 10 less than May 2022.
Based on citations in the 3rd Edition of “The Birds of Story County, Iowa,” by Stephen J. Dinsmore and Hank Zaletel (2001), plus my personal updates to the records, the drake Surf Scoter sighted on the 25th was only the 2nd May record for Story County (first on 03 May 2008 at AHHP). The Yellow-breasted Chat was also #282 for my Park/Yard List.
Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male, ♀=female), age (im=immature, ad=adult,), plumage (bp=breeding, nb=non-breeding), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard). The order follows the 62nd Supplement (2021) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 21st Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
