This male Green-winged Teal is
in "eclipse" plumage. he will soon molt into his basic plumage. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 8/26/17)
A total of 95 avian
species (plus 1 sp.) was recorded this month, ranking this month as the 4th
highest August among 20 years of records. August 2007 with 107 species
remains as the highest August and August 2001 with 46, as the lowest.
This total is 15 species more than last month and 10 more than August 2016.
The Red-shouldered Hawk
was #273 for my Park List.
Based on citations in
the 3rd Edition of “The Birds of Story County, Iowa,” by
Stephen J. Dinsmore and Hank Zaletel (2001), plus my personal updates to the
records, the 14 Northern Shovelers on the 31st may represent a new
extreme early Fall record for Story County (former record set on 1 Sep 1998 at a
location south of Ames). The single Chestnut-sided Warbler on the 4th
may also set a new extreme early Fall record (former record set on 13 Aug 2014
at Ada Hayden HP).
Listed below, following
the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional
miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male, ♀=female), age
(im=immature, ju=juvenile, abp=adult breeding plumage, ad=adult, anb=adult
non-breeding), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard,
FY=front yard). The order follows the 58th Supplement (2017)
to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds
and the 17th Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
