Aug 5, 2018: Viceroy vs Monarch

What species is that orange butterfly you are seeing?  Is it a Viceroy or a Monarch?  Here are both, so you can see the difference.  The Viceroy (left) has a postmedian line in the hindwings that the Monarch doesn't have.  It is also usually smaller.  Viceroys fly with shallow wingbeats.  Monarchs (right) have larger orange cells and fly with wings in a "V".  This specimen is a male  (one black scent mark in each hindwing). (Wolf. Oesterreich, 8/2/18)
