Dec 1, 2019: Wolf's November 2019 Wildlife Report

Both species of kinglets pass through our area.  The bright yellow (female) or yellow-orange (male) stripe on the Golden-crowned Kinglet (left) is always visible, while the red (only on male) on the Ruby-crowned Kinglet (right) is usually visible when the bird is agitated or excited.  The Ruby-crowned Kinglet is also slightly larger. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 11/04/19)

A total of 66 avian species was recorded this month, ranking this month as the 5th highest November (tied with November 2018) among 22 years of records.  November 1999 with only 40 species remains as the lowest November, while Novembers 2010 and 2014 with 77 species, are the highest.  This total is 29 species less than last month and the same as November 2018.

Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (=male, =female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile, abp=adult breeding plumage, ad=adult, anb=adult non-breeding), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard).  The order follows the 60th Supplement (2019) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 19th Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).

There are no or few records for the 5th (all-day poll worker), 9th-14th (California), and
23rd-30th (Texas).
