May 29, 2023: The Chase

Red-winged blackbirds are fearless and territorial. This one has no qualms about chasing a mature bald eagle many times his size! Near pond M. (Tana Tesdall,5/20/23)

Carp are spawning in the ponds around Ada Hayden. These Blue-winged Teal were surprised by a Carp in the shallows of Pond J. (Greg Courtney, 4/27/2023).

May 21, 2023: Watching the World

Paul and I watched this Northern Raccoon enter the hole.  After several seconds the head popped out and the raccoon appeared to be chewing on something. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 5/20/23)

May 19, 2023: Calm April Sunrise

Mid-April was characterized by dramatic changes in weather and lots of windy days. This sunrise image at South Lake was captured on one of the few calm mornings (Greg Courtney, 4/23/2023).

May 2, 2023: Tree Swallows are Back

May 1, 2023: Wolf's April 2023 Wildlife Report

Red-breasted Mergansers are the last merganser species to migrate through our area.  Both sexes always appear to have a shaggy "hair style".  Unlike most other waterfowl , mergansers consume fish, about 15-20 per day.  The more-colorful male is on the left. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 4/7/23)

A total of 113 avian species (plus 3 sp. & 1 hybrid) was recorded this month, ranking this month as the 9th highest April among 26 years of records. April 2022 with 138 species remains as the highest April, while April 1998 with 61 species is the lowest. This total is 35 species more than last month and 25 less than April 2022.

Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male, ♀=female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile, bp=breeding plumage, ad=adult, nb=non-breeding), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard). The order follows the 63rd Supplement (2022) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 22nd Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
