Jan 4, 2019: Great Blue Heron

This Great Blue Heron has been present all month and ties the late record for the Park set on the 31st of December in 2015.  Lately, the heron has been found on or below Weir N.  The heron also spends some time along the South Skunk River (seen flying from the river to the Park). (Wolf. Oesterreich, 12/31/18)

Jan 3, 2019: Caught in the Downpour

The wind driven rain streaks across the south lake, making it look more like a linear plowed field.  The storm kicked up quickly soaking a lot of walkers getting out on a warm afternoon. (Kevin Kane, 12/27/18)

Jan 2, 2019: Herring Gull

This subadult Herring Gull was photographed at the park on December 28th. It is a rare bird locally, and this particular individual was quite late. There is an early January 1998 record from AHHP, but otherwise the few records are from Nov-Dec. (Steve Dinsmore, 12/28/18)

Jan 1, 2019: Wolf's December 2018 Wildlife Report

An immature male Northern Harrier and sometimes a female have been sighted at the Park throughout the month.  Note the "owl-like" face and white "rump".  Harriers hunt low over the grasslands, searching for rodents. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 12/12/18)

A total of 52 avian species was recorded this month, ranking this month as the 6th highest among 22 years of records.  This total is 14 species less than last month and 2 species more than December 2017.  December 2016, with 67 species remains as the highest December.  December 1997, only a partial month, has the lowest total with 12 species.  If you disregard that month, then December 2003, with 27 species, is the lowest.

Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male, ♀=female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile, abp=adult breeding plumage, ad=adult, anb=adult non-breeding), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard).  The order follows the 59th Supplement (2018) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 18th Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
