May 26, 2017: Downy Woodpecker

Downy Woodpeckers are one of the woodpecker species that are year-round residents.  This individual is a male (note the red at the back of the head).  Also note the black spots on the white outer tail feathers, a minor distinction between the Hairy Woodpecker, which doesn't have them. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 4/27/17)
