One to two American Bitterns
have been sighted at the Park since mid-April. Most sightings were at
Pond J. American Bitterns can be difficult to see, especially when it
points its bill skyward. The vertical belly stripes blend in with surrounding
vegetation. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 4/20/18)
A
total of 117 avian species (plus 1 sp.) was recorded this month, ranking this
month as the 3rd highest April among 21 years of records.
April 2013 with 122 species remains as the highest April, while April 1998 with
61 species is the lowest. This total is 46 species more than last month
and 17 more than April 2017.
Based
on citations in the 3rd Edition of “The Birds of Story County,
Iowa,” by Stephen J. Dinsmore and Hank Zaletel (2001), plus my personal
updates to the records, the 147 Blue-winged Teal on the 13th may
have set a new Spring peak count (former peak of 92 set on 10 Apr 1986 near
Cooper Marsh). New Spring peaks may have also been set for Ring-necked
Duck (417 on the 12th, former peak of 225 set on 17 Mar 1984 at
Hendrickson Marsh) and Common Loon (20 on the 18th, former peak of 4
set on 15 Apr 1996 at Hallett’s Quarry).
Listed
below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional
miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male, ♀=female), age
(im=immature, ju=juvenile, bp=breeding plumage, ad=adult, nb=non-breeding
plumage), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front
yard). The order follows the 58th Supplement (2017) to the
American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and
the 17th Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).

29th.]
