Nov 1, 2020: Wolf's October 2020 Wildlife Report

LeConte's Sparrows are found in our area during migration.  Usually elusive, this sparrow was easily found in the dry marsh / prairie vegetation to the NW of Pond G on several days this month.  Between 1966 and 2015 their population numbers have declined by about 73%, mostly due to habitat loss. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 10/3/20)

A total of 112 avian species (+ 3 sp & 1 hybrid) was recorded this month, ranking this month as the highest October among 23 years of records.  October 2003 with only 55 species remains as the lowest.  This total is 12 species less than last month and 17 more than October 2019.

Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (=male, =female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile, abp=adult breeding plumage, ad=adult, anb=adult non-breeding), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard).  The order follows the 61st Supplement (2020) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 20th Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
