Dec 1, 2020: Wolf's Novemeber 2020 Wildlife Report

A single Red-necked Grebe, in basic plumage (Winter) was present from 29th October through 5th November.  One hadn't been seen at the Park since 18 October 2018.  This species is larger than Pied-billed Grebes, which are found every year.  They winter mainly along ocean coastlines. (Wolf. Oesterreich, 11/5/20)

A total of 72 avian species (plus 3 sp. & 1 hybrid) was recorded this month, ranking this month as the 3rd highest November among 23 years of records.  November 1999 with only 40 species remains as the lowest November, while November's 2010 and 2014, with 77 species, are the highest.  This total is 40 species less than last month and 5 more than November 2019.

Based on citations in the 3rd Edition of “The Birds of Story County, Iowa,” by Stephen J. Dinsmore and Hank Zaletel (2001), plus my personal updates to the records, the Blue-winged Teal on the 30th may represent a new extreme late Fall record (former record set on 28 November 1996 at Hallett’s Quarry).  The Vesper Sparrow on the 1st may also represent a new extreme late Fall record (former record set on 30 October 1982 at Doolittle Prairie).

Listed below, following the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (=male, =female), age (im=immature, ju=juvenile, abp=adult breeding plumage, ad=adult, anb=adult non-breeding), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard, FY=front yard).  The order follows the 61st Supplement (2020) to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds and the 20th Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
