A pair of Red-headed
Woodpeckers are nesting at Jensen Pond, the first record of this activity that
I know of. (Since they don't like disturbance, this may also be the last
time, due to the future construction of homes along the north side of the
Park.) Paul Domoto and I were informed of their presence by Tom and Cathy
Kaspar and on the following day, we discovered the woodpecker's nesting cavity. (Wolf Oesterreich, 6/27/17)
A closer look.
A total of 82 avian
species (plus 2 sp.) was recorded this month at the Park, ranking this month as
the 3rd highest June among 20 years of records. June 2008 with
87 species remains as the highest June, and June 2001 with 42 species as the
lowest. This total is 51 species less than last month and 12 more than
June 2016.
The Yellow-crowned
Night-Herons (27th) were also a new record for my Park List (#272).
Based on citations in
the 3rd Edition of “The Birds of Story County, Iowa,” by
Stephen J. Dinsmore and Hank Zaletel (2001), plus my personal updates to the
records, the Northern Parula sighting on the 24th may be the first
Summer record for Story County. The Yellow-crowned Night-Heron may
represent only the 10th record for the County.
Listed below, following
the species’ names, are the date(s) of sighting(s), plus the occasional
miscellaneous information regarding numbers, gender (♂=male, ♀=female), age
(im=immature, ju=juvenile, abp=adult breeding plumage, ad=adult, anb=adult
non-breeding), color phase (b=blue, w=white), and location (BY=back yard,
FY=front yard). The order follows the 57th Supplement (2016)
to the American Ornithologists’ Union Check-list of North American Birds
and the 16th Supplement to the 7th Edition (1998).
